whts up ppl, live in ny, so winter gets ugly sometimes, bouht my car , crv 05 in april of 05, last winter, it wasnt tht bad so cant complain even tho i felt my car slippin nd losin control on snowy roads couple of time...
my question is, how do u guys noe wen the real time 4wd kicks in?
also i live in a steep up hill, u guys think my car could take tht hill wen its snowy or icy??
1 thing i noticed, wen i try 2 make real fast turns doin 40s or somethin, tht hazard sign comes up while im turnin n goes away , is tht the 4wd? its the same sign tht pops off , its like a hazard signs tht popps on the top right part of the dash , nd its the same sign tht popps up wen u turn off the vsa button.
am i well prepared 4 the winter? or did my car slip in the snow bc i didnt have snow tires??

Sorry but I was just kidding before. :D :D
I drove my 2004 CRV in NY and never had problems.
Keep in mind that, because you are driving an AWD or 4X4, it doesn't mean that you can drive at 60PMH at the Bronx River Pkwy.
I seen so many people in NY with their SUV overturned because they were fliyng.
My question to you is, what type of car were you driving before?
The CRV will be much better. I bougth two CRVs in the past three years because I wanted a piece of mind while my wife and three year old are in it. While in NY, we never got stock on the road.
But Like I said before, just use a cammon sence while driving an AWD or a 4X4.

The 05 CRV comes with
Electronic stability control
Electronic stability control monitors and compares vehicle dynamics to driver input (steering/braking/ speed). When oversteer (fishtailing) or understeer (plowing) is detected, the computerized system engages the traction control and anti-lock brake systems in an attempt to control skidding.
Benefit:
Stability control acts instantly to help the driver maintain vehicle control, and may react well before the driver is aware of a loss of traction.
And
All-speed traction control
When wheel slip is detected, this traction control system uses either, or both, the brakes and electronic engine controls to slow the driving wheels until traction is restored.
Benefit:
This system helps a vehicle accelerate from a stop and to keep moving under slippery conditions that might otherwise cause the vehicle to lose traction and spin a wheel.
Perhaps you were taking the turn to agressive. Driving in NY during winter time is not like driving in Colorado (where I am now) In NY, it gets really cold and lots of time there is ice under the snow.
I usually apply the brakes or slow down before I start to make the turn.
Also, I usually take a spin at a local parking lot at the first good snow storm with the wife and make really aggresive turns and hit the brakes. That will get me back to the feeling of driving in NY.
I hope this helps but, I am sure that there will be more members with more knowledge.

Winter tyres is a HUGE boost to winter performance on any car and on the CRV its unbelivable how good traction you have...
So face the facts: there are no 4 season tyres...3 seasons at best everything else is a bad compromise...

The Swedish guy says it all... winter tires make the difference if you regularly drive in snow. The best thing I ever heard (from a Norwegian) was "winter is not all seasons... it is winter".
The 4wd certainly helps on going but stopping is no different from any other kind of vehicle. I drive a lot in winter and the trick is smoothness. Smooth acceleration, smooth stopping and turning. That doesn't mean I drive slowly... you just have to be thinking further ahead all the time.
Now onto the CR-V and winter... equiped with good tires it is as good as anything I have driven in winter. To the lake in winter the roads are very hilly, twisty and no salt. The CR-V has not let me down even when there has been 8 - 10 inches of fresh snow on the roads.

the light that looks like a hazard light is the traction system working - it flashes when it engages or activated
sounds like ur driving too fast to lose control so crazy, ive never had a problem in even blizzard like conditions in the CRV, always straight as an arrow

I think that mikey1981, is right, you maybe driving a little too fast.
My experience driving on winter conditions is, always keep my distance from the car in front and always be alert.
Also, go easy on the gas. I think that is the traction system working - it flashes when it engages or activated.
I don't know what part of NY you drive but, in the metro area you have to drive very agressive, if not everybody jumps infront of you. But I rather let them pass me than get into an accident.
I always try to leave earlier on snow days and believe it or not, I accept the fact that it is snowing and if I am late, it is my fault (should leave earlier)
I used the all season tires on my CRVs but then again, I did not live in hills. The AWD that Hondas is great, I trust it so much.
Again, just because you're driving an AWD or 4X4 with winter tires, doesn't mean you can do 60MPH on the higway. Funny thing is that in NY, even 2" of snow can be very dangerous (lots of times it turn into ice)
And like I said before, every time we get the first snow (at least 2") I like to go for a ride on a big EMPTY parking lot and push my cars to the limit. To me it gets me a feeling that I know how my car will respond on agressive turns and stops. You will see all the ligths go on the dash board.
I am not a pro driving on snow, but this is my experience driving in crazy weather for about fifteen years in NY.
By the way, if you see this much of snow on the ground (pict below) please use your bicycle instead

bro, 30 mph on wet mud snow gravel is enough, lol - the CRV isnt a rally car

NEVER hit the brakes in a situation like that, first try to regain control of your car. Slamming on the brakes could make matters worse.

soccer sta, looks like you need to learn how to go back to school dude. Damn, learn how to write first.
Then, learn how to drive again. Dude, I count my blessings everyday that I'm far far far away from someone like you on the road. Please don't ever hit me. You're like an accident waiting to happen.
Better yet, go take a performance driving class (I highly recommend Skip Barber).
I bet I can out drive you in a G35C 6MT than you in your CR-V. Give give me 4 winter tires.
Let me give you a little hint, for someone like you, please do yourself & the public a favor and get winter tires.

Well thatīs the "TRUTH" i also hav in my monkey brain and do by reflex: Clutch down, and then steer into control.... BUT with modern day cars with multi channel ABS systems it works just aswell to slam the brakes as you feel the slide coming (well you gott a have some traction in snow or so on ice its useless)
I know its aginst what ever you have learnt but it works relly try as the first snow hit you guys ( and im the first to admit: in real life ill do it old school without thinking)

judging by his posts, I am not sure reading the manual is an option for him.
There's been some good advice, but if you have been driving for very long you shouldn't need to hear, slow down in the snow, get good tires.
Here's my suggestion. Find someone you know and trust who has been driving in your area without any accidents for many years. Ask him to drive your car around in the snow. Watch what he does, when he slows down, how he takes turns, how closely he follows etc. Then you drive him around for a while and ask him ( or her ) how you're doing.

Why don't you go and take him by the hand since you too live in NY?
And please, show him some love my brother.

traction in snow or so on ice its useless
I thought most Swedes run studded tyres in the winter. I am in Stockholm a few times each year and if it is in winter I am used to hearing the clicking sounds of the studs while I am walking around.

Well yes the furtehr north you go more and more use studded tyres BUT infact you DONīT ned studs when its -20C and snow in 3 month then say Stockholm where i can be -20C andsnow and then 0C moist next week there you have bigger use for stud
Im using Friction tyres since im in the south and run a lot on dry tarmac and i prefer a smooth quiet ride over maxximum grip

Are you simply a lazy typist or are you real?
I suggest to test the car's winter ability you take it to the nearest downhill ski area. Put on a set of blizzaks first and just gun the thing at the bottom. See how far up that hill you can get.
