Could be a fuel pump gasket, or for some reason, the car is running real rich...
My eclipse always smells like gas, combination of running rich, and fuel pump right under the rear seat...

My eclipse always smells like gas, combination of running rich, and fuel pump right under the rear seat...Running rich makes sense, due to the cold weather "warm up" has been taking a little longer, I'll also check the fuel pump. I've even thought of replacing the "lifetime" fuel filter........Thanks for your help.

Do you have a rubber gasket between the engine bay and the plastic area below the windshield? If not, it could be that the ventilation system is picking up air from under the hood.

Another problem might be an over soaked evaporative cannister if it was over filled at the last gas fillup. If the tank is overfilled the cannister will get saturated and it will tank a long drive or two to clear it out.
The obvious question also is, are you sure the gas cap was replaced properly after getting gas the last time.
HTH,
Tom

HTH,
TomYes, the gas cap was replaced properly, but it's the second after market cap that I've have bought. Both my wife and I have drove off and left it on the bumper, so I've replaved it with a generic cap from the autoparts store. I'll get a new one at the dealership and see it that helps

I'll also, check into what EINSTEIN has suggested in the previous post.

Thanks for all the help, I'll keep you posted.[/b]

I have experienced that also and cannot figure out the cause as it only happens once in a while. Everything seems to be in order under the hood and you can't really smell gasoline when you open the hood. We have never replaced the gas cap and have the original. Other than this little quirk our CRV is the greatest vehicle we have ever owned.

Finally! someone else is experiencing the same problem.

It may be awhile before I find the problem, but I 'll post it as soon as I do. Just wondering if the gas we have in the states is too rich, supposedly Japanese vehicles are tuned to run on cheap gas..........might be a myth the dealership uses to sell vehicles?

And yes, it's the best vehicle I have ever owned.

Thanks.

My 2 cents....I notice a "gas smell" sometimes in our 93 accord...Upon close inspection 2 fuel injectors seem to be "weeping" fuel from the intake hose....nothing too dramatic, but probably need attention.

Smell only noticeable when the fan is set to "outside" air.

If you follow the manual for the next two or three fillups, and don't 'top up' the tank, you might find your problems go away. Flooding the evap canister is dangerous (from a fire / collision perspective) , and could get really expensive if it screws up completely. 'curly'

have you tried fuel injector cleaner?
