Hello all.. this is my first post and I had a question about the automatic transmission on the 2000 CRV. My mother-in-law is considering trading in her CRV and I told her I would be interested in taking it off her hands for her and letting her trade in my '95 GS-R and I'd just pay her the difference. My only concern on the CRV is the Automatic tranny. I've been driving a manual transmission for the past 5 years and know what to expect come rain or snow and know how much it costs to repair the manual in the even that a clutch wears out or a spring pops. Anyways, my questions is how reliable are the automatic trannys in these cars and what types of costs are associated with having to have them repaired if something breaks. Would you take the auto over the manual?? Thanks and let me know.

As a whole, the first-generation CR-Vs are great used cars. There are no reliability worries specific to the automatic transmission. Keep on top of your regular maintenance, and it is very possible to put 200,000+ miles on the CR-V drivetrain. Honda recommends 30,000 miles between fluid changes, but since there is no easily-serviceable filter, many of us like to go on 15,000-mile intervals.

Choosing between auto and manual will come down to personal preference. Stick-shift owners report better acceleration and fuel economy. Automatic owners experience less effort in stop-and-go traffic and lower rpms from the engine during highway cruising.
