One thing about the rovers you'll need to ask yourself - is it worth the reliability and resale of the car...

yes you are right....I shall have to work that bit harder....I'm going to give the CRV a good look over when it has its world debut at the Paris Motor Show 30th Sept till 15th Oct (I think I'm right its then) and then I shall decide or go back to the drawing board. :?

I'm really undecided...blowing hot and cold on this....you are right there is no replacement for bombproof reliability
In my opinion, the Euro CR-V does look a little bit better than the US one (different headlights, fog lights, bigger wheels) and although I'm not a big fan of this new design, I might decide to replace my Gen2 CR-V with a Gen3 CR-V in a year or 2 because the interior is quite nice.
All the things that I like about the CR-V (inside) are still there or have been improved .... and we spend most of our time inside the car not looking at the front grille

What's the estimated gas mileage of the LR2??
Over here in the States Land Rover finished last for reliability. I don't care that much about looks. Since you're willing to jump in price range how about waiting for Acura to sell the RDX in Europe. The Volkswagen Tiguan and Audi Q5 are also in the works plus the Volvo XC50? Basically, just don't get a Land Rover.

Frig, you'd better least that sucker or you'll lose your shirt on it. They are worth very little in three years. They've got all the reliability of a early 1980s Jaguar... If you want to spend that kind of dime, get an RDX and be able to enjoy actually getting to drive your vehicle. The RDX will be worth 3 times what a used Land Rover is in 6 years.

At least you'll get to know all of your Service Technicians names at your dealer if you by the Lr2

So, what you're saying is that with the LR2, you'll make more friends? Making friends is always good.

I'd rather have this than the new CR-V too. Same price range in the U.K. right? I seem to remember the MSRB being around £17-23 for the CR-V and £18-22 for the Freelander. On top of that, the new Freelander uses the Ford C1 chassis, which is one of the best global chassis designs in use today (and better than the Civic chassis IMHO...)
For what it's worth, I had more trouble with a 2001 Civic so far as build quality goes than my wife's C1=based '06 Mazda5.

Price range for the Freelander 2 is ~ 30K€ (20K£) 45K€ (30K£)

just for your info...as below...
The 233 PS (171 kW) i6 petrol engine provides a top speed of 124 mph (200 km/h) and 0-60 mph acceleration in 8.4 seconds (0-100 km/h in 8.9 seconds). Combined fuel economy is 25.2 mpg (11.2 litres/100 km). The engine is matched to a new six-speed automatic transmission, with Land Rover’s CommandShift™ offering manual sequential gear changes when required. There is also a driver-selectable sport mode, for livelier performance.
The diesel engine chosen for Freelander 2 is an all-new 2.2-litre four-cylinder. The 160 PS (118 kW) unit delivers peak torque of 400 Nm (295 lb ft), with over 200 Nm (148 lb ft) of torque from 1000 rpm all the way to 4500 rpm. The engine is easy and responsive to drive, as well as highly refined and economical, with a combined average fuel consumption of 37.7 mpg (7.5 l/100 km). An optional catalysed Diesel Particulate Filter (cDPF) is also available for even cleaner performance. Two transmissions are offered: a new six-speed manual gearbox and the same six-speed automatic used on the petrol engine (diesel auto available from Spring 2007).
Designed and engineered by Land Rover at Gaydon, near Warwick, Freelander 2 is built at the Halewood plant in Liverpool, where outstanding build quality has been acknowledged with a JD Power European Plant Quality Gold Award in 2005.
I know there has been electrical problems with the disco (LR3) but I think Land Rover are getting on top of reliability issues.
Anyway this is a Honda forum and I apologise for introducing this  I'm sure I'll up end with an 07 CRV as love is blind
