I'm a potential HRV buyer at this time looking at pluses and minuses. I understand that HRVs have a compact (space saver) spare. I hate those things. If it is true, is it possible to get a rear door mounted spare as in the CRV?

No, I don't think so. In contrast to the CR-V, the rear hatch is top-mounted (swings up, not sideways) and the gas springs wouldn't support the weight of a door-mounted spare. There is no suitable mount-point either.

However, you may simply replace the compact spare with a regular one - the space foreseen for the spare tire is ample.

Thanks mrphoo. I should have twigged about the rear door. Obviously wasn't paying enough attention. But you reckon the well or whatever is big enough to scrap the compact and put a full sized spare in?

The compact spare wheel in the HR-V has the same diameter than a regular wheel - this is a requirement for the 4WD models, else the dual pump system would overheat with the spare wheel mounted on the front axle. Thus a regular tire will fit into the well.

What might be an issue (I am not sure because I still have the compact wheel as a spare in my car) would be the excess width of the regular tire. From memory (can't check my car now) I think the well is deep enough to accomodate a regular tire.

The HR-V has a nice under-luggage compartment (a plastic well inside the spare tire) that can be used to store items. I'm not sure if you can continue to use it with a regular tire.

exactly, the luggage compartment is basically a spacer to fill the gap. once you use a regular (i guess it has to be stock size) spare it will have to go.

Thanks guys. I feel more comfortable with the spare business now.

I replaced my space saver with a 205/70-15 when I increased tyre size. Fits perfectly. :D
