Roof Pouch for X-country trip

Has anyone used a roof pouch or soft shelled storage device on the top of their CR-V for a long road trip, possibly through a little rain. I will be attending graduate school in LA soon and have to make a trip across the country from West Virginia. I'm looking for recommendations, experiences, or advice.

I used one to move from Indianapolis to Rochester, NY and did run into some rain. I bought a water resistant one at WalMart for about $35. I didn't put anything in it that would be damaged by water.

I would definately be selective about what I placed inside the pouch. After making the trip did you notice moisture inside?

Not at all, but then I hit the rain in Columbus, OH and drove another 6 hours. It might have dried out by then.
