Hi,
I am new to this board but am very close to making my buying decision in the next 24-48 hours. Right now I am trying to decide between the 06 RAV, 06 CR-V, and the 07 Hyundai Santa Fe. Those of you who have the later model CRV's would you do it again? What kind of mileage are you getting, and what are the REAL Off Road caapabilities of this vehicle? Can it handle the beach?
If you are going to tell me to wait for the 07 - I have already looked at the pictures and don't care for the new look- plus the deals are on the 06's.
Also would you recommend the automatic or stick? How has the reliability been?
I really appreciate your help and comments
Thanks!

I would 100% do it again. I love my CRV.
I get great gas milage, it is fairly capable off road and unstoppable in snow. Search for some of the pictures people have posted. It works well in sand. :)
I do NOT like the new RAV4 at all, I went to see the 07 Santa Fe and I loved the interior.
Get a manual CRV, the reliability is incredible.
Good luck.....
Don't need a crystal ball for this. I can tell you in advance what the responses will be. Are you asking the same question on Toyota and Hyundai owner's forums?

So far, I am very happy with my CRV. At times I wish I had bought the pilot, but the gas mileage at 25 mpg on average with a heavy foot and AC reminds me that I did the right thing.
The CRV does what I need it to and does so very well. I can't speak about sand, but it handles the New England winters just fine, which is why I bought it.
Good luck.

I will be stupid to buy a 2006 CRV now, to save what? $1,500 or so.
Please, the very week that the new 2007 CRV comes out I will be feeling like an idiot driving an outdated model car. In the same week the depreciation on the 2006 will be so bad.
Santa Fe? it is a Friking Hundai for God's sake (S#it product)
If I really was in that position that I have to get a car today, I will get the 2006 RAV4, because it is a new model and it rides OK. But since I am not in that position, I will wait till I see the new CRV. Honda cars are nicer, specially their inside design.
I need a new SUV too but I will wait at least till the new 2007 CRV comes out. If I don't like it I will end up getting the 2007 RAV4 (will wait til January) the Sport Edition I4, auto, AWD, moonroof and a cd changer. Total price incluiding destination fees and paper work $22,700 (except taxes)

I don't think depreciation is much of a problem with CR-V's. One of the local dealers has an '05 CR-V SE with 35K miles listed for $24,000! The msrp on a brand new '06 SE is only $1,400 more ($25,400). :)
didn't care for the rav 4, would not consider a hun die
don't do any off roading
only had it for about 1 1/2 months
would buy it again

For sure would do it again, and probably will. We have an 05 LX with 43k on it and thinking of getting an 06 EX as the dealers are dealing on them + attractive APR rates. Dont care for the look of the 07 at all.
We've owned CRVs since 99 and have put close to 300k miles on them (we drive a LOT). Never had one single mechanical problem, ever.
As for MPG on our LX AWD avg'ed low 20s around town and 27-29 on the hwy with cruise.
Yeah, since you're in a Honda forum, the answer you get from most of us are going to be "yes"!
As for reliability, just add gas, air in the tires, maintain as scheduled and the CR-V will treat you very well.
Depreciation isn't a big issue if you plan on keeping for a few years. I thought the 1st gen will depreciate after the 2nd Gen came out and boy was I wrong. The 2nd owner to my CR-V just sold it after driving 3 years (130K miles when she sold it) and it went for $7K (1997 LX model). Back then, the car went for $20K. I'd say depreciation of $13K over 9 years isn't bad at all.
CR-Vs are very good vehicles and you can go wrong with either one. But if you're on the fence and not in a rush, wait until the 2007's come out Sep 1 and decide.
Enjoy the site.

I would def get another CRV but if offroad capabilities are a selling point for you, don't wait till 2007 because the 2007 model has significantly less ground clearance. Go for the 2006. On saturday we had a meet in Toronto and we drove to Oshawa to play in the sand pits. The pits were reaaallllyyy dry so the sand was uuber deep but even despite having poor tires the other two guys did quite well. I have Bridgestone Dueler AT REVOs on mine (1997 CVR) and it just loves the sand. I drive offroad quite a bit. In one of the pits there is a long sand hill called "testhill" and the CRV can actually make it about 50ft further up than my friend's modified Jeep TJ  . If I can get my act together this week and get around to putting a video of the weekend together I'll post it, but until then this should give you a good idea of the CRV's offrad capabilities- mind you, this is the 1st Generation- 2nd gen has more power and a better 4wd system....

2nd gen has.... a better 4wd system....
Actually, only the '05 and '06 Vs have a better 4WD system. 8) It's better in that it reacts slightly faster. I think the bigger advantage in the '05 and '06 is the VSA feature. But in reality, my '99 has done everything offroad that I have asked of it. And that has been quite a bit.

Hey, what's with the mixed messages here? Do you like it or not? I happen to think I went right with mine. Couldn't resist.

I'm one that has an H tattooed on my chest and like others have said, it does what it needs to do and it does it well. I would again open my wallet and buy another V.

I cant believe how well my 06 V handles off road...I have been playing alot in the mountains and puddles around here and it has been faultless....I have not gone 'off road' as in no road....but lots of dirt roads, rocks, hills, sand and mud puddles! :D
I have put in into the D1 gear to get up some steeper roads, but the AWD is working great for me....it aint a high clearance jeep, but it gets me where I need to go for mountain biking, fishing and hiking.
I also have been using my picnic table alot...its nifty!
Would I buy it again? The 07 looks like its a no go, due to looks and clearance....Hyundai is so freakin' ugly and I am unsure about reliability...Toyota Rav is SO expensive...so I am left the the CRV.
The ride is stiffer and the driver position is not as comfortable as I would wish...the road noise is bothersome at times....that is the downers about the V.
Power is very good and handling is great altho the steering heavy....
Anyway, everyone has to decide what is best for them....good luck in your search :D

i have 2nd gen V; it's ok car; but no more. for the same money - 25K - you can get a superbly made rav4 with ass woopping 265 hp. that's with the same japan made vehicle, none of them assembled here or there ones, superb toyota quality and very very competible on all parameters.
we have 2 new toyotas - rx300 and scion tc, and just bought a used corolla - and all of those vehicles are simply better designed than my V.
hardball fanatics will argue about this or that, but honda is heavily lagging behind toyota in small suv line. i will not argue about ridgeline, but i will not buy that truck simply because of that moronic door handle they stuck into it. same goes for murano, which was a superb suv for years - except that dashboard spooked me away for good.
rav4 is a slick car. one of my peer associates just bought one - and i checked it in and out. very nice. i'd have bought that car with v6 with my eyes closed over cr-v; except that i am "kill to death" owner, so many years to come between me and my V.

I buy Honda's for reliability. Are they the fanciest? No. Are they the most powerful? No. Do they drive for a very long time with minimal problems?Yes. We have an 05 EX with 5 Speed...it is primarily my wife's car. She finds it very comfortable and roomy... I do too. The gas mileage is ok at 24MPG on average. I was pleasantly surprised at the peppiness of the 4 cyl.
I am not going to knock any other brand...I just know that when I went looking for a super dependable vehicle that I could drive the tires off it...Honda is my 1st choice. No car is perfect...but for the price...I think the value is exceptional for the CRV. I would absolutely buy again.

I really like my '04 CR-V LX AWD MT but may or may not buy it again. In 2004 it was an obvious choice, but now the competition has some appealing options.
But the biggest reason for my current lack of enthusium is the local Honda dealership. Since they refuse to sell new cars for a reasonable price, I had to drive an hour and a half to a larger market to get a decent deal. That was bad enough but the service department has really started to upset me. They have been OK with the CR-V to date (no real problems) but have consistantly tried to screw me with several problems with my '03 Accord that I purhased certified used from them.
Find out about your local dealership. If they are cool, the CR-V is a great purchase. If they suck (like the dealership in State College, PA :x), there are probably better options.

THIS IS SO TRUE!!!
LONG STORY SHORT:
My wife and I, went to PALM HARBOR HONDA to test drive a CR-V. She loved it. Didnt want a mazda-5 anymore after that drive. The DEALER HAD ALL CR-V'S (EX MODELS MOSTLY) WITH $1,500 WOTH OF ADD-ONS...GLASS ETCHINGS PIN-STRIPES, CARGO MATS.
MSRP FACTORY $23,100. DEALER 24,600-24,800.
IM TOLD I CANT BUY FOR UNDER 25K!
MY WIFE WAS UPSET ,BUT I TOLD EM TO KISS MY A**
I CALL AUTOWAY HONDA AND ARRAINGE THE PRICE BASED ON CARSDIRECT.COM PRICE OF
$20,995. SAME EXACT VEHICLE!!!
WHEN I CAME TO PURCHASE MY WIFE PICKED A SAHARA SAND OFF THE TRUCK WRAPPED IN PLASTIC 7 MILES.
20,995 NOT BAD CONSIDERING USED ONES ARE PRICED AROUND 19-20!!!

I did do it again. Traded in the 02 EX for an 05 SE. I know Toyota makes a very good product, but when I bought the 02 I didn't consider another make or model and when I bought the 05 I didn't consider another make or model.

got my 05 CRV EX for $650 under invoice. I travelled 60 miles for that discount as my local dealer does not price aggressive.
Same thing happened when I bought my 06 Accord...my local dealer after losing the 1st deal said they would not lose on price...well to make a long story short...they were all talk, no action. Bought somewhere else.

the long and short of it is: Toyota doest match dollar to dollar value with the honda. NO AIRBAGS? cmon now, its 2006! So, u need to start dropping G-Notes to get airbags, and o wait, they make sure they bundle that option with others so you pay even more. The value of a loaded crv, altho no v6, i think, far outweighs the toyota in many respects, ie sunroof & leather (2 HUGE options)

1. Search this board for all Articles and Posts that reference PTTR or Pull To The Right.
2. Drive the very car you think you're taking home, BEFORE signing anything.
3. If you notice anything like what's described as PTTR, make them fix it before you sign anything. Don't take their promise to fix it, just make them fix it first.
4. If they can't be bothered to do that or can't remove PTTR the first time, they must not respect you much as a customer. Get a Toyota.
If it were not for my experience with dealer-service people and having to fax them the service bulletin on this, and wasting vacation time and my first week of ownership on the issue, I'd have given you a very glowing report and would have recommended you pick up an '06 while you can and with no provisional recommendations such as these.
Too bad, too. The VSA is great on an ice patch, I passed crybabies in Expeditions and Suburbans in snow last winter left and right, and it seats a fair number of people comfortably. Plus, it hasn't changed its performance when they switched to E10 around here, where my wife's car runs like crap on every other tank of it. Why the company has to do it's best to alienate people who can read and who know the difference between "road crown" and bad geometry, is beyond me. The CR-V seems like a good value for the money, feature-wise, until you have to tell them how to complete the manufacturing process (aligning the strut tower and/or subframe] after customer delivery.
If not for my experience with the local dealsership and having read other peoples' experiences similar to mine, I'd have recommended any model CR-V. I would still do so, guardedly, PROVIDED that you follow the caveat that YOU drive THE ONE you will take home, first, before you sign any contractual paperwork on the deal.

2006 Rav4 compared to the 2006 Honda CRV:
Passenger Volume 2 more cubic ft. of passenger space (108.2 vs 106).
That info is according to vehix.com
I did tested the 2006 RAV4 and it handles better and road noise is much lower than the 2006 Honda CRV. Also, while seated on the back seat, it was so more comfortable and roomier.

Last year I was comparing the Ford Escape and Honda Cr-V. Sadly I bought the Escape and have regretted it every day since.
Ouch, care to share why you decided on the Escape at that time? Was it the commercials Ford runs? I thought their ads on TV are pretty engaging, especially the one about "escaping" from the in-laws' place buried in deep snow.

Yes I would, I just did. Have an 05 SE Pewter Pearl, just bought an 06 EX Nighthawk Black. Spectacular vehicle. Just don't spill milk in the back without the floor tray. It is a pain in the ass to get out.
