Just to add to the rumors and speculation...
Did anyone else notice the shape of the rear gate on the new 2007 CR-V? It seems to flare out and above the flare is a seam. I can't help but wonder if it has a two peice gate where the lower part could drop down to be tailgate and provide access to the spare.

I'd say very doubtful.
Look where the handle is...would be a very clumsy design for any kind of a split-opening hatch. Only makes sence for a traditional liftgate.

I'd say that seam is where the plastic trim meets the metal door. What really bothers me about this rear door design is that if that hole at the bottom is where the handle is, it's kind of an awkward grab point. The Gen1 and Gen2 door handles could be grabbed from above or below easily. This doesn't look very easy to grab. perhaps it is one of those newer electric "push button" releases though. That would be nice.
this hole is very strange and bad solution for whatever it is inside
it will gather water, dust and all kind of rubbish - imagine if its a handle...
lets hope the rear door is opening by remote

The usual place for a door handle should be above the license plate, under the "H" logo. Perhaps that is what that black button to the left of the "H" logo is in the picture.

Then what's the hand-slit at the bottom of the door for?

That's what we're trying to figure out :?:
It could be the release handle, but it seems kinda low.

That black 'button' under the chrome strip is likely the backup camera. Similar to the MDX. This must have been a EX-Navi. Oh how I wish Hohohong got a picture of that interior.

The 2nd-gen V had the door handle on the back...how does its rear window open? Another button? Maybe on the 3rd-gen, the window can still open independently of the hatch...that would explain a button and a handle.

Backup camera - that would be nice :D

I guess the CRV EX-L with navi will have a backup camera ! (like the Pilot !) :D

Maybe it's a drawer. Pull it out and lift a lid (which can serve as a picnic table) and there is your doughnut spare along with the jack and tire iron.
The upper part of the door would open upwards with the release above the license plate.

I think it's a one-piece hatch -- like a minivan.

Too bad if it is. it would be nice to be able to open the glass and access the trunk without having the spare tire in the way.

I wonder about the hatch.....notice the line just above the "handle" in the bumper? My guess is that the one piece hatch opens here (with the release handle above the license plate, and maybe the bumper folds down to provide a bit of a ledge or seat. Though truthfully, it would look better for the handle to open this to be inside and unexposed till you open the hatch.
Have to admit it gets to be fun conjecturing on pictures only!

My guess is that the lower portion below the seam is plastic, which flares out towards the rear to meet the bumper. In the event of a minor bump, the (probably overpriced) plastic part takes the hit rather than the (expensive to repair) sheet metal on the tailgate.
This is unlike the current CR-V, which really doesn't have a rear bumper. If you back into something, you're either right up against the rear door or you'll make contact with the spare tire, which then pushes into the door. Either way, you'd be looking at some $$$ to repair.

Anyone else think it's just ugly?
I prefer the spare on the rear door. It helps differentiate a SUV (or small SUV) from a minivan. Well that and the sliding side doors.
No offense to the minivan crowd out there, I just prefer the "sporty" look you get from having a spare on the back of the vehicle.
I love the look without the tire. I also think it is easier to open (one touch), no need for extra room to swing the big door. I like that it has more of a bumper. It also has very nice handles to pull the hatch down. The handle to open is just above the bumper. The area where the other overhang is where the backup camera is hidden (love it!)

I like the slick/classy look it has now more then the "sporty" look with a tire.
I went fror a silver oddyssy to this. Big differance..
:-) It is interesting how everyone's perception of is sporty is different. To me it looks more like a hatchback without the tire, which reminds me of other sporty cars like the several Toyota Celicas I had!
Also a friend of mine who has an older CRV tells me that the tire on the back makes it more difficult to judge the distance to the other car when you parallell park into a tight spot in the city.

It just gives the V a much cleaner look...
The last car I had with a tire on the back was a 56 Nash Metropolitan... It was adorible! Sorry off subject... :D
