Any information found on whether the 2007 CR-V will be RV-towable 4-wheels-down like its predecessors?

I don't see why not.

Why would you want to tow a vehicle rather than put it on a light trailer? I'd think that all the towing would wear the tires out as well as beat the suspension up prematurely. Just curious.

I saw a guy a couple of months ago towing a G55 AMG with a Prevost. Now THAT is my kind of camping!

Because a trailer adds weight to the vehicle that is towing it. Plus, then you have yet another item with tires that wear out. If you are on a trailer, you still have suspension wear on the vehicle too...

I'm hoping you guys have some info on this topic, i.e. towing with the wheels down.

I was asked to tow a friend's 2000 CR-V (I believe it's the AWD version) behind a rental truck. We put it up on a tow dolly so the two front wheels were up.

I have little experience in towing a vehicle, much less something that is AWD, 4WD, etc. I asked him what kind of precautions we'd need to take and he said it should be fine this way. We left it in Park, though, not neutral, and towed it almost 100 miles.

Now we notice a weird smell, sort of burnt. Did we damage the transmission? Or is it the brakes since we left it in Park? Any help would be appreciated. Thanks.

Dude, I have no idea about the rigth way towing a CRV.
I moved from NY to CO in 2005 and the way I towed my 2004 CRV EX AWD was, I rented one of those trailers from Uhaul, I got a truck and pull the Trailer with the CRV on it. The tires didn't touch the ground at all.

I am looking for responses on this topic, since I will learn from it too.
Dude, I hope the CRV is OK.

the CR-V must always be towed with all wheels off the ground!!!

i think you have damaged your transmission and probably the entire 4WD system :(

hopefully yours wasn't damaged too bad, although you already said you notice a strange smell

good luck

Greetings from the sunny UK,

My Honda manual recomends you dont tow it, put it on a trailer to avoid damage to the tranny.

You can tow the V but you need to follow specific procedures outlined by Honda.

Fellow member summersr gives some good advice and talks of using a checklist to prevent a costly mistake.

<gulp!>

It's obviously too late, but I'll ask this anyway: Does your friend still have his Owner's Manual? If so, I'd like to direct him to pages 176, 177 and 273, which cover this topic.

Best of luck getting the damage repaired!

So, from us owners here with RT4WD CR-Vs, the answer is yes. We can tow our CR-Vs on all 4 wheels but you'd need to follow the directions as outlined by Honda (checkout Skyout's post).

The worst nightmare that one can see is when a tow truck tows a CR-V backwards with the rear fronts on the ground. Talk about OUCH!

I would bet you burnt out the clutches in the RT4WD unit.

Time to go to a junk yard and get a new unit (It is the whole rear differential)

You are lucky he told you it would be OK, because he is going to be pissed when he sees the price.

Hehe, some people are weird. I think he's more concerned about the move to a new place rather than the car.

Anyway, I seriously told him to get it checked out and he will. No more towing for us.

wml's friend seems to have done EVERYTHING wrong, except for putting an "I LOVE MY HONDA" sticker on the back.

It's WAY too late to move the owner's manual to the bathroom. Read my response in this post: http://www.hondasuv.com/stg/viewtopic.php?p=139914#139914

i'm convinced it's a FWD vehicle, not AWD.
the towing method utilized is fine for FWD vehicle.
and that towing method would convert an AWD vehicle to FWD by burning up the innards of the rear "pumpkin". (looks like a differential, but isn't.)
so, either way, it's now a FWD vehicle.

The '07 owners manual should have the answer. I can only speak for what my manual says about the '03 CRV. Quote (Pg 224) Your CRV can be towed behind a motorhome at legal highway speeds up to 65mph. DO NOT exceed 65mph. Otherwise, severe transmission damage will occur. To avoid damage to the 4WD system, it must be towed with all 4 wheels on the ground (flat towing). Unquote.
It then goes on to describe exactly what proceedure must be followed to prepare the 5 speed manual tranny and the automatic tranny for towing. It's actually pretty easy. Hope this helps.
