No, only in the last few months. And we've had it since 1999.

well, when i take it in for the 1st oil change ill tell them. Im sure its really nothing more than a annoying noise. Just curious if anyone elses Element has made this sound and if so how was it fixed. till next time :)
Are you referring to the noise from the fuel pump? Some Hondas have that issue...nothing wrong but annoying nevertheless.

Belts will squeal sometimes when cold so you may want to have their tension checked. Also, there is a TSB for a squealing idler pulley on 1st gen. Check the article section for the article with links to the TSB. It may be that.

...especially because in the cold weather the pressure and liquids contract a bit. If it's definitely a short tiny buzzing, that's probably it. If it's more of a squeal then it may be a pulley or belt---my wife's Dodge Grand Caravan does that every time we start it when it's booger-freezin' cold out, and the shop just says "um, we can't find a problem, try using premium gasoline."

Whining noise on cold starts? I have 'em all the time. Nothing like that coming from the "E" though. I make enough noises for both the "E" & me..

I've had an Element since May, so this past January was the first really cold weather it's been through. When the temperature is in the single digits (or minus) it makes a whining noise when first started (more like a belt issue - not a good noise!) but it only lasts a few seconds and then it's gone. But I'm also having problems with the clutch (I have a manual trans) and windshield wiper fluids in the really cold weather - so I'm assuming that they're all related. (Warning: I'm know NOTHING about cars - so this is just my opinion!)
I don't think its an issue, but it would be interesting to see what the dealer says. I have been driving Hondas since 88 and at one time or another each one seems to do it when the temp gets below zero. My son is driving a 96 Accord with 180,000 miles on it. It does the same thing, and we have had no problems with the car. By the way, my E made the same noise last week when it sat outside at work with the temp at -7 all day.

gh - Did you notice what condition your wiper fluid was in after the all day of -7?? Every time I mention problems with the cold weather, Honda just shrugs it off. (Am I wrong - or do all the Honda engineers really live in California and don't know what cold weather is and how it affects cars??)

I've had several cars, not all Hondas that had the same problem. A mechanic told me that it was due to my starting technique. If the car's idle speed is set too high or you race the engine right after starting when it's very cold, the starter may not be able to disengage from the gear on the flywheel for a few seconds.
The problem get aggravated if you try to start the car after its already running. The gears gets a little mangled on the edge/ end.
