Hi,
I bought a replacement fob from eBay as mine started to play up and refused to lock the car.
Once it arrived however, my original fob started working again. No matter, I thought as I'll swap them anyway because the original looked a bit tatty.
But, I tried following the instructions that came with the new fob and ended up very frustrated as I couldn't really get past the first few steps (the car wasn't behaving as it should be according to the instructions).
I made sure that it was a proper HR-V fob (checked serial etc) and checked out seller too (all sound with 100% feedback), rather than just jumping for a 'might work with a HR-V' kind of listing.
I can only think that the fob is for a later model (mine is a late 2000) even though the fob carries identical serial numbers. I've held onto it just in case my original plays up again, when I'll go to the dealer (tail between my legs of course) and have them code it for me.
So, yes it's a bit of a risk buying 'blind' from eBay - but you might end up being OK.
(:!: I'll post the instructions up if anyone wants a look - just shout up)
