View Full Version : Oil mess when changing...

OK so when I did the oil change on the weekend everything went exactly as the many times I have done my CRX and other cars. Till I removed the filter. I am used to there being a fair amount of oil released as you pull the filter off, being the hot oil from the centre section of the filter and the gallery entry. This stuff usually runs down all over the place and requires some wiping up. When I removed the HRV oil filter I was surprised that only three or four drops appeared :?: :!:
After the job, I started the car (still on the lift) and let it idle for a while while I put my stuff away and washed my grubby mits, and then checked underneath for drops (that would indicate a leak). Nothing.

Off I went happy in the knowledge that my new baby has my favourite semi-synthetic Mobil coursing through her veins. At the next stop I noticed a small puddle of oil under it, and under the car had oil droplets all over. At first I thought I'd made some mistake or something was not tightened properly. But when I checked, there was no more oil coming out, so...

It seems the oil that runs out of the filter gets trapped somewhere and then slops out when you are driving again.
Anybody else found the same thing?
Anybody have a 'how-to' to prevent this?
There is not much space around the filter - even less then the CRX DOHC engine.

If you look down the back of the engine, there's also a place for new oil to gather if you spill it :) Much much easier to do with the car on ramps and with the airfilter and airbox removed :)

there's an oil change procedure in FAQ written by freelance1000, there's no mark of such problem there. i hope he comments.

And the new drain plug washer???

Also check the CR-V forum for items regarding oil filter seal problems

I'm almost certain that is due to the fact that the HR-V was designed for the northern hemisphere. Since in South Africa you're hanging down from the ground you actually will have to reverse the oil filter for the oil to come out!

Yes, but the left hand thread cancels out that effect!

I wiped under the oil filter after changing, and the rag did get very oily.
