that's what the dealership says. they suggested i bring it to a transmission specialist [Leons in the San Fernando Valley] to have it replaced (they said replaced and not rebuilt, which seems odd). dealership is Miller Honda in Van Nuys, Ca.
car has 105K already, about 2/3 of that is open highway, other third is city driving. my maintenance has been by the book- at the dealership, per the manual schedule.
does it seem out of line that the tranny would fail at this point in the cars life?
and- what's the chance it's a solenoid [or something not requiring a complete rebuild] issue?
thanks for you help-
Greg

It is often easier and cheaper to change out a factory rebuilt transmission rather than have some local grease monky try to fix yours.

Did you have the recall done?, at what milage?

don't remember the date it was done, but it was within a few days after i received the notice in the mail. in fact, i was the first one at the dealership to bring a car in for that fix.

Did they say what broke in teh Transmission?

said they couldn't say for sure what caused it to heat up- not without opening up the whole thing and that was going to cost $400+ just to find out. he did tell me that there was a decent chance they could get away with just replacing the clutch discs and pump [i think he said pump, not sure now though] but there was also a decent chance they'd find more damage- electronics for instance.
so... since i was hoping to keep the car only for another year or so, i decided to skip the repairs and get a new Pilot. yay.

Yeah, I've notified the mods already, just some damned spammers. Don't know why it's just this thread.

2003 honda pilot with 86k on it. malfunction lamp came on last week. dealer's diagnostic says transmission failure and needs replacement for about $3000. before lamp came on last week, the pilot has had an acceleration issue intermittently. when accelerating from stop, it would get stuck on the lower gears (most likely 2nd or 3rd) and would not shift to a higher gear.
this pilot already had 20k on it before the transmission recall was issued and done in 2004. i am thinking that maybe the transmission was already partially damaged then or it just has an inherent transmission problem.
anyway, i am talking to honda corporate right now. it is disappointing that i have had other honda vehicles with 125k and no transmission issues.

p.s. why is the time stamp on this website wrong? it is 8:50 am right now (01/20/09) but posting time says 05:20 pm.

You paid for the CODES and they are indispensible when asking for help (or determining if the dealer has a clue).

Please provide the CODES.

Have you changed the tranny fluid since the recall was performed?

Other people with failed Pilot transmissions have been able to negotiate a reduction in the cost of the replacement. Sometimes as much as 2/3 off.

But: they had documentation that the service had been performed according to the published schedule. Hopefully you do too.

I have the work order. Under LINE OP CODE is #A 999 - is this the error code for this problem?
I have replaced the transmission fluid several times according to the maintenance schedule. Actually honda dealer service did it at 45k and I did it at 75k.

But, do you have the paperwork to prove that it was done?

The honda dealership was able to get Honda Corporate to pay 75% of the replacement cost. That means I have to pay $700. I appealed for Honda to cover everything since this seems to be a defective part despite the transmission recall and the recall was not done until the vehicle already had about 20k on it. They turned me down. Well, at least I have tried. It still is a good deal for me. I am just a little disappointed that my other honda vehicles are over 125k with no transmission issues.

That sounds like a better deal than most people are getting. I would continue to patronize that dealership!
