1999 CR-V LX 2WD
Mileage 31,500
Part #: 80291-ST3-E01
Changing the A/C filter was not as difficult as I thought, and I am certainly glad I didn't pay a dealer $100 to do it! I was already doing some experimenting with illumination for the A/C controls, so I decided to do the filter while I was at it. [Mental note: clipping the illumination wire going to the A/C control unit will allow the lights on the A/C and Recirc buttons to stay bright with headlights on. However, none of the A/C controls will be lit at night!!! Needless to say I put it back as it was.
The first step in replacing the A/C filter is removing the glove box. This is easily accomplished by first opening the glove box and removing the stop on each side (squeeze the clips together and push inward). After this, unbolt the two hinges under the glove box (a philips screwdriver will work). Now you can remove the entire glove box.
Next part is to remove the metal brace that the glove box hinges were mounted to. This involves removing a total of 6 bolts using a 10mm and an 8mm socket wrench. Note that in the photo, the lower dash around the radio is removed, giving better access to the bolts. I mentioned that I was working on something else at the time and that's why it is disassembled. You do not need to remove that part of the dash. It CAN be done by only removing the glove box and metal brace. I tried it. Hard to get to some bolts, but it can be done (use a small ratchet). That's how I will do it next time.
After the metal brace is removed, the wiring harness needs to be removed from the two mounting clips. This allows the filter to be removed. Once this is done, the filter housing can be slid out (clipped on the bottom I believe). Replacement is straightforward.
Reassemble everything when you're complete and voila! Total time will probably be 30-45 minutes.
In comparing the new filter to the old, there is quite a difference in look. It was a bit unnerving to find the bugs, pebbles, etc. in the old filter. Our other car doesn't have a changeable filter!
Good luck!!

I have recently joined this group. This is awesome. I am a member of an Acura Club, too.
I am fixing to do my 30K maintenance work. Plugs/AC Filter/Air Filter and Oil Change. I am done with the Tire rotation.
The directions are good. I can not open the pics, though. Is it possible to ask for a big favor (short of buying the Helm Manual) to get a Fax copy of the directions to replace the AC Filter?
Thanks in advance.

Finally got to do mine!
When I started, got stumped and tried to access this site to review these steps, but something screwy with my login, in short, did not see this post and had to do it the hard way, meaning learn on the job! If I only had access to this set of Instructions, would have been no sweat! Great instructions! Great pics, too!
Anyway, my story does not have a good ending. Had I seen this Pic, I could have saved a hour of work, because my Honda Dealer screwed me! They gave me the wrong filter!!!!! I could have postponed opening up my AC Filter, until I got the exact filter!
So, I ended up trying to vacuum the filter and put it back! I am headed to the dealer right now to show my dis-pleasure! After all the hard work, for nothing.
It was a good practice, though! Now, it will take me a breeze to replace my Cabin Filter.
All of you, out there, save you $100!
Thanks again!

By all means go for it. It's not a bad job. just take your time and get the instructions from one of the on line vendors.
Mine was a mess. In 55000 the previous owner never changed it among other things. Well now I can breath easier.

Well that's not something I want to do again anytime in the near future!
Thanks for the instructions tho... couldn't have done it without ya
I wonder why they didn't design the plenum so you could change the filter from the bottom? Be easier to get rid of all the accumulated 'stuff' & etc too. |

Replaced mine last week. What a difference. Article and pics were a great help. Saved myself about $125. Cdn.
Only problem was asking for the part. Lordco knows the part as a cabin filter, they didn't know what a/c filter or hepa filter was.
Thanks....'97 CR-V, Langley, BC |

Greetings one and all! I'm a brand new member and am ecstatic to find some very informative articles. I recently did the A/C filter on my "Husband's" CR-V and got the Filter from Advance/Discount auto parts, it was a purolator filter and cost only about $20.00 US they had to order it but saved $$ over the dealer price, not to mention labor charges!
Thanks again for a GREAAT SITE!!!!
